"If You Didn't Know🌟Now You Know"
Escape the System
Rating:
What if you could feel inspired every day of your life? What if you got to work on the projects you love and could make a positive difference to the world?
Author, coach and hypnotherapist Joe Barnes presents the journey to escaping from a purposeless life, based on society’s expectations, to finding your passion and living the life you want. Inspired by the films Fight Club and The Matrix, and based on more than four years research into how history’s mavericks like Martin Luther King, Galileo, Muhammad Ali and Arnold Schwarzenegger overcame the System, Joe Barnes reveals the formula for succeeding on your own terms.
What is the system?
What are the benefits of escaping it?
How to escape?
This book is full of thought-provoking bits and pieces, not all of them are pleasant but they do a good job at pushing the reader to question everything, especially the system as we know it.
I liked how the author used different examples of real-life people and fictional characters to get his point across. My favourite was the Matrix analogy, the whole blue pill, red pill dilemma.
If you were to choose, would you go for the blue pill or the red pill? Would you pick a familiar and “comfortable” prison, or would you choose to awaken? Food for thoughts!
Many interesting examples are given as the Author develops an escape plan from the system. Some ideas I found intriguing, most of them I already knew but it was still interesting to revisit them from a different perspective.
In a nutshell, this book is definitely worth a read, you might not agree with everything the Author has to say but it will make you think and question your reality and that’s the whole point.

Who Took Eden Mulligan?
Rating:
‘They’re dead. They’re all dead. It’s my fault. I killed them.’
Those are the words of Iona Gardener, who stands bloodied and staring as she confesses to the murder of four people in a run-down cottage outside of Belfast.
Outside the cottage, five old dolls are hanging from a tree. Inside the cottage, the words “WHO TOOK EDEN MULLIGAN?” are graffitied on the wall, connecting the murder scene with the famous cold case of Eden Mulligan, a mother-of-five who went missing during The Troubles.
But this case is different. Right from the start.
Because no one in the community is willing to tell the truth, and the only thing DI Danny Stowe and forensic psychologist Rose Lainey can be certain of is that Iona Gardener’s confession is false….
Unfortunately, this book did not manage to live up to its intriguing premise. And boy, I really tried to get into it but in vain, perhaps it was just a tad too slow for my liking.
The setting of this story was way more interesting than the story itself, I’d go so far as to say that it was the highlight of this book.
The writing was good but repeating certain details, multiple times, was not needed and made my reading experience a little less enjoyable.
I had so much hope for the finale, I even thought that if it was good, it would redeem the whole book and make it worth a read. Unfortunately, the ending was a bit of a let-down as it was both, rushed and unconvincing.
5. The Final Verdict
This book was not my cup of tea but it might be your cup of coffee, who knows? Might be worth a read to find out.

An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena
Rating:
We can’t choose the strangers we meet.
As the guests arrive at beautiful, remote Mitchell’s Inn, they’re all looking forward to a relaxing weekend deep in the forest, miles from anywhere. They watch their fellow guests with interest, from a polite distance.
Usually we can avoid the people who make us nervous, make us afraid.
With a violent storm raging, the group finds itself completely cut off from the outside world. Nobody can get in – or out. And then the first body is found . . . and the horrifying truth comes to light. There’s a killer among them – and nowhere to run.
Until we find ourselves in a situation we can’t escape. Trapped.
How would you feel if you find yourself trapped in a secluded hotel during an ice storm with no means of escape and a killer on the loose? Sounds like the getaway from hell, doesn’t it?
This is a suspenseful whodunit mystery with a prominent ‘Agatha Christie’ vibe to it.
As the myriad characters were introduced, I feared that it might be a bit of a shore to remember each one of them with their respective secrets and backstories but fortunately, that wasn’t the case as the author made sure to give them enough substance to stand out but not enough to connect with, which I don’t mind in this kind of stories.
I loved the writing and the creepy setting. Some of the characters were somewhat cliché and not very likeable.
The story also gives you the feel that everyone is guilty till proven innocent. Therefore, I did not figure out the killer or why they did what they did till the final reveal, which I felt was a bit rushed and also a tad underwhelming but that’s probably because I had high expectations and so I was bound to feel a bit let down. Moreover, the motives of the killer weren’t very convincing in my opinion.
However, I did enjoy the very last sentences of this utterly gripping book and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a thrilling mystery!
