Book Review: Escape the System by Joe Barnes

Escape the System

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Synopsis:

What if you could feel inspired every day of your life? What if you got to work on the projects you love and could make a positive difference to the world?

Author, coach and hypnotherapist Joe Barnes presents the journey to escaping from a purposeless life, based on society’s expectations, to finding your passion and living the life you want. Inspired by the films Fight Club and The Matrix, and based on more than four years research into how history’s mavericks like Martin Luther King, Galileo, Muhammad Ali and Arnold Schwarzenegger overcame the System, Joe Barnes reveals the formula for succeeding on your own terms.

Review:

1. The system

What is the system?

What are the benefits of escaping it?

How to escape?

This book is full of thought-provoking bits and pieces, not all of them are pleasant but they do a good job at pushing the reader to question everything, especially the system as we know it.

2. The Matrix

I liked how the author used different examples of real-life people and fictional characters to get his point across. My favourite was the Matrix analogy, the whole blue pill, red pill dilemma.

3. Blue or Red Pill?

If you were to choose, would you go for the  blue pill or the red pill? Would you pick a familiar and “comfortable” prison, or would you choose to awaken? Food for thoughts!

4. The escape

Many interesting examples are given as the Author develops an escape plan from the system. Some ideas I found intriguing, most of them I already knew but it was still interesting to revisit them from a different perspective.

5. The Final Verdict

In a nutshell, this book is definitely worth a read, you might not agree with everything the Author has to say but it will make you think and question your reality and that’s the whole point.

I would like to thank the Publishers, NetGalley, and the Author for sending me a copy of this book.

Book Review: You Are Here by Thich Nhat Hanh

Review of You are here

Rating: ⭐ ⭐

Synopsis:

In this book Thich Nhat Hanh, the renowned Zen monk, author, and meditation master, distills the essence of Buddhist thought and practice, emphasizing the power of mindfulness to transform our lives. “Mindfulness is not an evasion or an escape,” he explains. “It means being here   , present, and totally alive. It is true freedom—and without this freedom, there is no happiness.”

Based on a retreat that Thich Nhat Hanh led for Westerners, this book offers a range of simple, effective practices for cultivating mindfulness, including awareness of  breathing and walking, deep listening, and skillful speech. You Are Here also offers guidance on healing emotional pain and manifesting real love and compassion in our relationships with others.

Simple, warm, direct, and startlingly potent, this book reveals the heart of the Buddhist path and helps us to reconnect with the joy and wonder of being alive, regardless of life’s changing circumstances.

Review:

You Are Here; when a paragraph turns into a book!

This book was off to a good start with some attention-grabbing insights, alas, it swiftly turned into a repetitive disarray.

I hate giving up on books so reading this one till the end was an arduous challenge that I struggled to overcome.

With less repetition and a bit more substance, ”You Are Here” could have been a stimulating read.

In a nutshell, this book was not for me, mainly because I have read better books on mindfulness and being present that this one seemed a bit too simplistic-same old same old, and slightly disorganised for my liking. However, that does not mean it won’t be someone else’s cup of tea!

Book Review: The Power of Comparison by Robert Prior

Review of The Power of Comparison

Rating:  ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

Synopsis:

We’re all products of our comparisons. What we think of ourselves, the way we feel and how we behave are affected by the comparisons we make. The comparison-generating properties of social media mean this is more relevant than ever before. Our comparisons also influence the everyday decisions we reach, often to our disadvantage. From eating to investing, driving to buying and working to dating, we can use them far better than we do. In “The Power of Comparison” you’ll learn how to tackle the mental health problems comparisons can cause as well as ways to turn them to your psychological, physical and financial advantage. It’s a manual for better living in this exciting, yet challenging, new era.

Review:

This book was quite informative!

“Where there’s social interaction there will be comparisons and where there are comparisons there will be effects on our psychological well-being.”

From how social media accentuates the comparison syndrome to the art of constructive thinking and self worth, this book delves into our current reality, shedding light on a number of relevant topics.

I would definitely recommend it!

Review:

This book has a few useful tips but nothing noteworthy!

I’d classify it more as an entertaining read than an informative one.

It is also worth mentioning that as the book progresses, it does get a tad repetitive. In my opinion, it would’ve worked better as a short and to the point article on ‘how to say no in different situations’.

I would like to thank the Publishers, NetGalley, and the Author for sending me a copy of this book.

Review:

This is a very short and to the point read about the art of negotiation. It has some quite useful information but I personally did not learn anything new so I will recommend this to somebody who has very limited to no knowledge on the topic.
