Book Review: The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins

The Wife Upstairs

Rating: ⭐ ⭐

Meet Jane. Newly arrived to Birmingham, Alabama, Jane is a broke dog-walker in Thornfield Estates––a gated community full of McMansions, shiny SUVs, and bored housewives. The kind of place where no one will notice if Jane lifts the discarded tchotchkes and jewelry off the side tables of her well-heeled clients. Where no one will think to ask if Jane is her real name.

But her luck changes when she meets Eddie Rochester. Recently widowed, Eddie is Thornfield Estates’ most mysterious resident. His wife, Bea, drowned in a boating accident with her best friend, their bodies lost to the deep. Jane can’t help but see an opportunity in Eddie––not only is he rich, brooding, and handsome, he could also offer her the kind of protection she’s always yearned for.

Yet as Jane and Eddie fall for each other, Jane is increasingly haunted by the legend of Bea, an ambitious beauty with a rags-to-riches origin story, who launched a wildly successful southern lifestyle brand. How can she, plain Jane, ever measure up? And can she win Eddie’s heart before her past––or his––catches up to her?

With delicious suspense, incisive wit, and a fresh, feminist sensibility, The Wife Upstairs flips the script on a timeless tale of forbidden romance, ill-advised attraction, and a wife who just won’t stay buried. In this vivid reimagining of one of literature’s most twisted love triangles, which Mrs. Rochester will get her happy ending?

1. The Hype is Real

I know this book is hyped for a reason and I know I’m in the minority here and I get it, I get why this book is hitting the mark for so many readers, but these are my reasons why it completely missed it for me…

2. Make me Believe

Neither the characters nor their actions are believable and usually, I’m ok with this to a certain extent, especially if the book has other qualities to redeem it; this was not the case in this one.

3. Surprise Me

When I pick up a thriller, I look forward to a thrilling ride with twist and turns that keep me on my toes. The main twist of this book is crystal clear from the very beginning and it sets the scene for a series of predictably underwhelming twists.

4. Ridiculous

You know what’s worse than predictable twists? A ridiculous ending and this book managed to have both!

5. The Final Verdict

Not my cup of tea but it’s so many readers’ cup of coffee and as I said before, I get it!

I would like to thank the Publishers, NetGalley, and the Author for sending me a copy of this book.

My Top 5 Restaurants to Try in Bonn 🇩🇪 Germany

Bonn is a multicultural city and so we couldn’t skip the fun culinary experience the city had to offer. From Italian to Japanese and passing by Moroccan cuisine, Bonn has it all!

1. Tuscolo 🇮🇹 Italian Pizza

It’s not a secret, I love all things Italian and so the first thing I had to try in Bonn was the famous Italian Pizza from Tuscolo. As soon as I had the first bite, I understood the hype around it. It was absolutely delicious and if you’re ever Bonn, you should give it a try or two😋.

2. Okinii 🇯🇵 Japanese Sushi

ATTENTION all Sushi lovers, this is the place to be!

I loved the innovative concept of this all you can eat restaurants. Armed with a tablet, you can order a set of small-very-delicious dishes every fifteen minutes-up to two hours, for a reasonable price. The atmosphere was quite enchanting, adding a magical touch to our dining experience. All in all, it was a fun night with a lot of good food and random chinwags.

3. Al Atlas 🇲🇦 Moroccan Cuisine

In one of our random walks down a narrow, hidden corner of Bad Godesberg, we stumbled upon a Moroccan Restaurant and it did not take us long before we found ourselves inside, debating what to order from the array of traditional food on offer. The decision was not easy as we take our food orders rather seriously. After a thorough selection process, the winners were a traditional chicken Tagine with olives, french fries, and warm bread and a big platter of grilled goods; it was worth our time and effort 🤓.

4. Hans Im Glück 🇩🇪 Burgers

When I have to queue for food, I expect the food to be great, not good, great!

Fortunately, Hans Im Glück did not disappoint. Surrounded by bamboo sticks and lively music, we were served one of the best burgers I’ve had in months. It was fresh and delicious and had all the right ingredients to satisfy our burger-craving. Definitely recommend 👍🏼.

5. Limao 🇧🇷 Brazilian Cuisine

Liamo was recommended to me by a friend, it had good reviews and the food looked delicious and that’s all I needed to know. As soon as we reached our destination, we knew we were in for a treat. In a cosy atmosphere, we were served two delicious meals that will stuck in our tastebuds’ memory for some time. As for the drinks, they definitely stole the show and almost put the food to shame; almost 😉.

My Top 5 Things to Do in Bonn 🇩🇪 Germany

Bonn, the former capital of West Germany, sounds like candy to me as it reminds me of Bonbon and Bonne, both are French words, one means candy, the other means different things.

This German city is a must-see, not only because of its rich history or because the greatest composer of all times was born here but because of everything it has to offer. So? Los geht’s!

1. Rhine River

Fancy a walk by one of the longest and most important rivers in Europe? Look no further, when in Bonn, you get the chance to see a lot of the Rhine River. And if walking is not your cup of tea then you can always take a cruise or jump into a ship to go from one side of the river to the other while enjoying the magnificent view along the way. We were blessed by a couple of sunny days during our stay so we did what we love to do: Reading! Armed with our loyal kindle devices, we made our way down the river and found refuge in one of its peaceful corners where time and space faded into oblivion.

2. City Centre – Beethoven House & HARIBO

There is a lot to see in Bonn city centre from Bonner Münster, which is one of Germany’s oldest churches to the old Town Hall aka Altes Rathaus, passing by multiple shopping streets, peppered with fountains and hidden gems.

If you’re like me, a fan of classical music then you will be thrilled to know that the house where composer Ludwig van Beethoven was born is just around the corner and to me, that was the highlight of my visit.

Did you know that HARIBO is actually an abbreviation of Hans Riegel, Bonn? The famous German confectionery company was founded in 1920 in Bonn by Hans Riegel Sr. and we couldn’t come to Bonn and not have some of these renowned sweets.

I am personally not the biggest fan of the chewy texture of these particular sweets but when in Bonn, you have to give it a try.

3. Museum Haus der Geschichte

If you had the time to only visit one museum in Bonn then go for Haus der Geschichte. As I walked from station to station, I found myself slowly slipping down memory lane, the German history flashing before my eyes, the war, the coming down of the Berlin wall, the sad times, the happy times and everything in between; it was an emotional rollercoaster that I would definitely recommend to everyone visiting Bonn!

4. Drachenfels

If you enjoy hiking then Drachenfels is the way to go but if sweating up a mountain is not your idea of fun, then you can always jump into Drachenfelsbahn, which will transport you up the hill and onto a fairytale land.

The first stop will be Schloss Drachenburg, a private villa that looks like a fairytale palace, where one’s imagination can and should run wild. The second stop will be the ruins of Drachenfels castle and as I stood there, what captured all of my senses was the Rhine, flowing through the former capital in all its glory; that view was worth it all!

5. Parks & Gardens

I’m sure you have got the gist by now you. Bonn is a green place, full of attractive parks and picturesque gardens.

For me, each green place serves a different purpsose. For example, Japanischer Garten or Japanese garden is my go to for reading. The Botanische Gärten der Universität Bonn is my favourite place to sip on my coffee while learning more about the plants, their names, where they come from, it’s like an exciting coffee date with nature. Rheinaue Park is for listening to an audiobook while admiring the beauty of the Rhine and its flamboyant surroundings.

There are so many green spaces here and they might seem similar at first as they all offer calm, peace, and serenity but if you look closer, you’ll notice that each place has its own charming character and quirky personality and it was my pleasure to get to know each one of them. Now it’s your turn 🙂

These were our Top 5 things we did in Bonn, we have also made a 2 parts video, which you can watch here and here.

Book Review: Strangers by C.L. Taylor

Review of Strangers

Rating: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

Ursula, Gareth and Alice have never met before.

Ursula thinks she killed the love of her life.
Gareth’s been receiving strange postcards.
And Alice is being stalked.

None of them are used to relying on others – but when the three strangers’ lives unexpectedly collide, there’s only one thing for it: they have to stick together. Otherwise, one of them will die.

Three strangers, two secrets, one terrifying evening.

The million-copy bestseller returns with a gripping new novel that will keep you guessing until the end.

1. Unputdownable!

Three main very-well-developed characters come together in an action-packed suspense that left me wondering, where the hell is this going?

2. Treacherous waters

From the very first chapter, this book managed to pull me straight into its treacherous waters and even though I tried to take a break in between and have a KitKat, it simply refused to let me go till the very last chapter.

3. Denouement

Although I quite enjoyed the ride, somehow the denouement did not live up to my expectations but I believe that’s what happens when you read too many Psychological Thrillers.

4. Those twists and turns

Even though I was not the biggest fan of how everything came together at the end, I still enjoyed the wild ride with its highs and lows, twists and turns.

5. The Final Verdict

I would definitely recommend this book and will also be on the lookout for this author’s future work!

I would like to thank the Publishers, NetGalley, and the Author for sending me a copy of this book.
